A year ago today I arrived in Texas from the Philippines, experiencing daily nausea, thinking I had only a few weeks, maybe months, to live. Within a week I prepared a suggested memorial service, paid for my burial at the funeral home, updated some legal papers, and made some final financial arrangements. Then I waited. A year later, I’m still waiting. I’m surprised as anybody that I’m still here.
At the beginning of June, I had a bad week. The nausea returned, I think I had a fever, overall I felt weak and achy. I was supposed to travel out of state to conduct a wedding, but instead the bride and groom showed sympathy toward me by choosing to come to Fort Worth for their wedding next week so I would not have to travel. I was hoping I would still have enough strength to conduct the wedding.
Today, July 1, I’m feeling great. No nausea, I feel mostly strong, no aches, and I’m eating well. All this without undergoing any cancer treatment. But I have a theory as to why the cancer is not yet causing me a lot of problems. Ever since I started my cancer diet of eating anything I want, I’ve gained weight. Instead of the cancer further invading my pancreas and other vital organs, it now has massive new areas of benign fat to invade. How’s that for a scientific hypothesis! I doubt it will make it to the pages of any medical journal, but it satisfies me as to why I’m still here. Imagine the headline: New High Fat Diet Delays Cancer Progression!
Realistically, I know that cancer is hard to predict. As I’ve said before, cancer is like a wild animal, you never know which way or how fast it will run. It is not my goal to live as long as I can. According to Psalm 139, God has already ordained the number of days I will be on this earth. My goal is to glorify the Lord with each day He gives me. Then, with eager anticipation, I will look forward to that day when I can leave this world behind and step into His beautiful, glorious, wonderful, eternal kingdom.
Until then, I will continue to find joy in each day, spend time with my kids and grandkids, read inspiring books, fellowship with the Lord, pray for those in need, and continue my amazing new cancer diet! Philip and Martha have begun their new jobs and life in Richmond, VA. while Hannah and Daniel are desperately needing housing because their current landlord sold the house they were renting. Thank you for reading this and keeping up with what’s happening to the Moses family. May the Lord’s goodness and mercy follow you every day of your life.
